Actress calls out lack of diversity at NBC after they canceled her sitcom

Actress Natalie Morales slammed NBC for what she insinuated was a lack of diversity after the network opted to cancel her show “Abby’s.”

Morales, who appeared on The Daily Beast’s podcast The Last Laugh earlier this week, was the first Latina bisexual lead character of a network sitcom prior to the shows discontinuation.

“So much for diversity!” Morales stated during the podcast.

“I was really disappointed,” she continues. “It sucked. It sucked really hard. I think we did a really great thing. And I’m really proud of what we did.”

The network axed the show in May after just 10 episodes had aired. “Abby’s” came in last among all NBC sitcoms that season, and ranked 19th out of 20 scripted series, only outranking a show that had already been canceled, according to TV Line.

“If I’m being honest, it’s bullshit to tout all of these firsts and all this inclusion and all this diversity and then not market the show whatsoever,” she says. “So that tells you something,” she adds. “Not that I’m not thankful for the people that put it on the air. I just feel like, if you’re going to say that you’re about diversity, then actually walk the walk.”

Two years ago, Morales wrote an essay for her former Parks and Rec co-star Amy Poehler’s website where she came out as queer.

“I am not attracted specifically to any type of gender. I’m attracted to people. Each person is their own incredible, massive universe,” she wrote.
