Rudy Giuliani, who joined President Trump’s legal team last week, met with special counsel Robert Mueller Tuesday to discuss a possible interview with his client as part of the Russia investigation.
While it’s not off the table, Giuliani conveyed Trump and his advisers still oppose the idea of an interview, according to three sources who spoke to the Washington Post.
Mueller reportedly told Giuliani his team would like the opportunity to ask the president about his actions during the presidential transition period and his first few months in office. An interview is crucial to wrap up the possible obstruction of justice portion his investigation, the special counsel also said.
Last week when he joined Trump’s legal team, Giuliani said he aims to negotiate an end to the investigation “for the good of the country and because I have high regard for the president and for Bob Mueller.”
As part of Mueller’s investigation into possible Russian collusion in the 2016 election, the president is reportedly under investigation for possible obstruction of justice.
The president has long called the investigation a “witch hunt.”
