SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Dozens of veterans and their families have taken part in a ceremony at Springfield’s Oak Ridge Cemetery to mark the 70th anniversary of the World War II D-Day invasion at Normandy, France.
Friday’s ceremony at the cemetery’s World War II Memorial was one of scores across the United States to commemorate the June 6, 1944, invasion that helped change the course of the war.
Those in attendance included several veterans who took part in the D-Day landings.
The event also included re-enactors in World War II uniforms, patriotic music and a rifle salute by the Sangamon County Inter-veterans Burial Detail.
The ceremony was sponsored by the World War II Illinois Veterans Memorial Committee.
