Two firefighters involved in fatal crash suspended without pay

Two Baltimore City firefighters were suspended without pay Thursday pending an administrative hearing into their role in a fire truck crash that killed three people.

Nathaniel Moore, the driver, and his supervisor, Lt. Thomas Moore, were suspended without pay based on an internal investigation by the Baltimore City Fire Department into the crash that killed three city residents in an sport utility vehicle.

“Our department took the position their actions were serious enough to warrant the suspension,” Chief Kevin Cartwright said.

Fire truck No. 27 crashed into the SUV at Park Heights Avenue and Clarks Lane en route to a call on Dec. 13. The crash killed Iryna Petrov, 49, Mikhail Petrov, 35, and Igor Saub, 24.

A preliminary probe determined the driver of the fire truck did not heed the traffic signal, as required by city law.

Investigators also concluded the fire truck was traveling at 47 mph when it struck the SUV, which investigators saidwas moving at 23 mph. Truck 27 was following two other emergency vehicles that had passed through the intersection.
