Iran: Trump can’t unilaterally undo the nuclear deal

There is “no possibility” of Donald Trump undoing the nuclear deal with Iran as president, the leader of Iran insisted Wednesday.

President Hassan Rouhani reportedly told his cabinet that the U.S. president cannot overturn the nuclear deal with Iran because it was negotiated and approved by several countries, not just America.

“Iran’s understanding in the nuclear deal was that the accord was not concluded with one country or government but was approved by a resolution of the U.N. Security Council, and there is no possibility that it can be changed by a single government,” Rouhani said, according to France24.

Trump said during the campaign that he would not rip up the deal, but would do his best to renegotiate it. Analysts also said he could enforce it so strictly as to make Iran back out of the deal.

“You know, I’ve taken over some bad contracts. I buy contracts where people screwed up and they have bad contracts,” Trump said in August. “But I’m really good at looking at a contract and finding things within a contract that, even if they’re bad, I would police that contract so tough that they don’t have a chance. As bad as the contract is, I will be so tough on that contract.”

Iran has already received many of the benefits it was promised as part of the deal, including billions in sanctions relief from the international community.
