Macron announces French space force

French President Emmanuel Macron announced the creation of a French space force to reinforce his nation’s capabilities.

“To give substance to this doctrine and ensure the development and reinforcement of our space capabilities, a space command will be created next September in the air force,” Macron said Saturday in a speech in front of the military. The space unit will be called the “Space and Air Force.”

Macron’s announcement follows President Trump’s idea for a U.S. Space Force as the sixth branch of the military.

In February, Trump signed an order which would direct the military to consolidate space personnel. To take full effect, the move will need to be approved by Congress.
