Target and Bloomingdales — together at last in Georgetown?

Georgetown may have its answer for the struggling and outdated Shops at Georgetown Park — and it’s in the form of big-box retail.

The Georgetown Current is reporting that Target and Bloomingdale’s are closing in on deals with the mall, which is in massive need of big-name retailers who will breathe life back into the cavernous building at the base of Wisconsin Avenue on M Street. But big box retail raises one big question —how will anyone take anything larger than a breadbox home with them?

With Target, which sells plenty of oversized and awkard-to-carry items, this is more of an issue. Parking in Georgetown is already a nightmare and requires that consumers walk or drive to shops. So if you’re lucky enought to nab a parking spot on M Street in front of the mall (we’re already laughing over here), then you’re home free for loading your lamp or vacuum cleaner into your car.

But if you’re like the rest of us and end up parking half a mile from your destination or hoofing it from the Foggy Bottom Metro station, the thought of lugging around homewear all over Georgetown becomes much less appealing.

On the plus side, Target and Bloomingdales would be a tremendous coup for the mall and D.C., which could use a few more department stores. It does make an interesting marriage, though — who knew a mid-priced home and clothing store plus a high-end clothier were meant to be together?
