Support for Democratic-controlled Congress growing: Poll

Support for a Democratic-controlled Congress is increasing in the weeks leading up to the November midterm elections, the results of a new poll released Sunday shows.

The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found Democrats hold a 12 percentage point advantage over Republicans, up from 8 points in August.

Fifty-two percent of registered voters said they preferred Democrats to be in control of Congress, while 40 percent want Republicans to remain in charge.

The voter preference for Democrats is the largest advantage the party has held in NBC News/Wall Street Journal polling since Trump became president.

Democrats have gained support among white, working-class women, and other groups who have shown preference to Republicans in the past.

Fifty-nine percent of registered voters said they want to see “a great deal of change” or “quite a bit of change” in the direction Trump is leading the country.

Trump’s job approval rating — 44 percent — remained the same from August polling.

The poll, conducted Sept. 16-19, surveyed 900 voters. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percentage points.
