Matt Gaetz slated to speak at summit in Trump-owned resort amid controversy

Rep. Matt Gaetz, who is under federal investigation over whether he had sex with a minor, is scheduled to speak at a conservative summit this week in Florida in front of an organization that strongly supports former President Donald Trump.

The Florida Republican will speak at the Save America Summit on Friday at Trump’s Doral golf club and resort in Miami, according to a readout from the host, the pro-Trump group Women for America First, which was obtained by the Washington Examiner.

Organizers said some of the conference topics will include “election integrity,” “big tech and censorship,” and “defeating the radical Biden/Harris agenda.”

The event will likely be the first public event the 38-year-old Gaetz will speak at since reports emerged on March 30 that the Justice Department has been investigating him since last summer over whether he had sex with a 17-year-old and paid for her to travel with him.

Gaetz has vociferously denied all allegations of wrongdoing, saying he is being subjected to “false allegations,” and accused a former Department of Justice official of attempting to extort him and his family.

“We are aware of the controversy surrounding Congressman Gaetz. We know firsthand what it is like to be treated unfairly by the main stream media. We know that partisan political witch hunts are standard operating procedure for many in the media. We believe that you are innocent until proven guilty,” Women for America First Chairwoman Amy Kremer told the Washington Examiner in a statement.

Gaetz has been a conservative firebrand and staunch ally of Trump since he assumed the office of Florida’s 1st Congressional District in 2017.

“Congressman Matt Gaetz has been a fearless leader in Washington. Few members of Congress have been more willing than Matt to stand up and fight on behalf of President Trump and his America First Agenda. We are honored to have Congressman Gaetz speak at the Save America Summit,” Kremer wrote in a press release.

The group hosting the summit also organized a rally on Jan. 6 near the White House grounds where Trump spoke and encouraged supporters to march to the U.S. Capitol to protest lawmakers who were certifying electoral votes and affirming President Joe Biden’s victory. At about that same time, rioters stormed the Capitol complex in a chaotic display that left five dead and 140 officers injured.

Trump was impeached for incitement of insurrection by the House but was acquitted by the Senate.

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Reps. Louie Gohmert of Texas, Kat Cammack of Florida, and Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia are also slated to be in attendance at the Save America Summit. There is no confirmation Trump will be at the summit, but the Washington Examiner has asked whether he will attend.
