Booze flew off Virginia store shelves on Black Friday

Black Friday liquor sales were a boon for Virginia.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch is reporting that sales the day after Thanksgiving totaled $5.9 million, up 86 percent from the same day last year.

State-owned Alcoholic Beverage Control stores opened early that day and provided discounts as high as 50 percent on select merchandise. All purchases over $50 earned another 10 percent off at the register.

Only five of the state’s 338 stores saw a decline in sales, but a third of them at least doubled their sales from 2011. A Virginia Beach store had the highest sales with $63,287.
