A worker at the Sparrows Point steel plant in Baltimore County was killed in an accident Wednesday morning, the plant’s owners and Baltimore County officials said.
Robert Fuchs, 65, of East Baltimore, was crushed by falling debris at approximately 10:15 a.m., according to Baltimore County police spokesman Bill Toohey.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, Toohey said, and authorities found no evidence of suspicious activity.
Fuchs was involved in cleanup efforts around a bulk material handling system, which moves raw materials from a storage area to the plant’s furnace, said Mel Baggett, spokesman for plant owner Severstal International.
Baggett said a “very intensive” investigation by plant officials, the United Steelworkers union and local authorities was under way.
“We don’t know much at this point,” Baggett said. “We take these things very seriously. No rock will go unturned.”
United Steelworkers officials at the plant and at union headquarters did not immediately return calls for comment.
“We send our condolences to the family,” said Gregory Mason, chief executive officer of Severstal International. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with them during this difficult time.”
