On-campus stabbing injures two, kills one student at North Carolina high school

Two minors were stabbed and one teacher was injured Thursday morning at a public high school in Jacksonville, North Carolina.

A physical altercation broke out inside a common area in Northside High School at 7:01 a.m., with a school resource officer arriving on the scene 20 seconds later. The students were treated at Naval Medical Center Camp Lejeune, with one dying of their injuries. An autopsy has yet to determine the student’s cause of death. A teacher received medical aid from EMS on the scene for minor injuries but was not stabbed.

Because all involved students are minors, the Jacksonville Police Department is not releasing any names.

“Our partnership with the Onslow County Schools enabled the police officer to respond quickly, which certainly prevented any additional injuries,” Jacksonville Police Chief Mike Yaniero said during a press conference Thursday.

Onslow County School District Superintendent Barry Collins reported Thursday that each of the district’s 22 schools has at least one school resource officer, with some of its large high schools touting two officers each. The district recently added the officers.
