Flanked by paintings of his late mother and grandmother, University of Georgia shooting guard Anthony Edwards was selected as the first pick in the 2020 National Basketball Association draft.
The Minnesota Timberwolves kicked off an unprecedented November NBA draft by selecting Edwards, a freshman from Georgia who dominated the Southeastern Conference in his sole season with a college team.
“It’s an indescribable feeling,” Edwards said during a virtual presentation by ESPN. “I can’t even describe it. So many emotions. My family is emotional. I feel like when I get out of here, I’m going to be emotional. It’s beyond measure to be in this situation.”

Edwards becomes the 11th straight first pick to be a “one-and-done” player, having attended only one year of college. He averaged 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.3 steals per game in his sole season at Georgia.
The Golden State Warriors took Memphis center James Wiseman with the second pick, and the Charlotte Hornets chose guard LaMelo Ball with the third.
