Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, urged President Trump on Thursday to reconsider his tweeting habits after he released a tweet claiming he once saw MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski “bleeding badly” from a “face lift.”
“I worry about how the president is seen in the eyes of the world,” Collins told MSNBC’s Chuck Todd. “I was really disappointed and dismayed by the president’s tweet.”
The senator said she has been discouraged by the president’s contributing to the “tremendous divide and polarization” happening throughout the nation.
“It’s one thing when he was a candidate. All of us say things that are a little bit over-the-top when we are running for office, but once you’re a public official — particularly if you’re president of the United States of America — the greatest country on Earth, you have special obligations to be above this.”
Collins said she hopes that the “overwhelming” reaction to the president’s latest tweet will help him reconsider his social media presence. She also said that she would prefer if he never tweeted again.
The Republican senator also tweeted Thursday morning saying: “This has to stop — we all have a job — 3 branches of government and media. We don’t have to get along, but we must show respect and civility.”
