Average wages rise in region

Workers employed in Baltimore City enjoyed some of the fattest pay raises of any area in the country, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In Baltimore City, the average weekly wage rose 7.1 percent between the fourth quarter of 2004 and the fourth quarter of 2005, the latest numbers available.

That?s well ahead of the national average, which grew by 1.5 percent over the same period, the bureau said in a statement.

Of the 323 large jurisdiction in the United States, Baltimore ranked ninth in percentage growth of wages during that period. The average weekly wage rose $66 during the period, resulting in an average weekly wage of $992.

Lee, Fla., was No. 1 in wage growth, the bureau reported.

The average weekly wage in Baltimore County rose 1.3 percent during the period to $872. In Anne Arundel County, it rose 2.4 percent to $853.
