Winter returns: Light snow could slow evening commute

A winter weather advisory was posted today for part of the Washington area ahead of a wintry mix expected to bring about an inch of snow ahead of the evening commute.

The National Weather Service posted the advisory for areas generally west and north of Washington, including Montgomery and Loudoun counties in the immediate area. The advisory will be in effect from noon to 10 p.m.

Forecasters said light snow will spread over the region from west to east through about 2 p.m., then a period of moderate snow is possible during the late afternoon and evening rush hour.

Snow will taper off during the evening hours with 1 to 2 inches of accumulation possible, the weather service said.

In the District, a rain and snow mix will transition to snow before 4 p.m. with a high temperature near 41 degrees. Highs will reach about 38 in the western suburbs.

Federal workers in the Washington region have the option to take unscheduled leave or work from home today.

The average high temperature on today’s date at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is 46 degrees, according to weather service records.
