BROWSER WARS: Google has released an app for its Chrome browser to compete against Apple’s Safari on the iPhone and iPad.

ESCALATING RIVALRY: Thursday’s announcement at a Google conference fires yet another shot in a showdown between two of technology’s most powerful companies. Chrome’s arrival on Apple’s top-selling mobile devices came a day after Google unveiled a tablet computer to vie against the iPad.

THE MOTIVE: Google Inc. has to give Apple Inc. some of the revenue it gets as the built-in search engine on the mobile version of Safari. With searches using Chrome, all ad revenue goes to Google.
