More charities pull events from Mar-a-Lago

More groups are deciding to cancel events at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, several days after the president made controversial remarks in response to violence in Charlottesville, Va.

On Friday, Susan G. Komen, the Salvation Army, and the American Red Cross decided to pull events at the Palm Beach, Fla. resort, according to the Washington Post. Trump has been widely criticized for his reaction after the violence at a white nationalist and supremacist rally in Charlottesville last weekend.

Several other charities decided this week to pull events at Mar-a-Lago including the American Cancer Society, the Israeli Red Cross, and the Cleveland Clinic.

Breast cancer research group Susan G. Komen told the Post that it is “not a political organization.”

The Salvation Army said that it wouldn’t hold an event there because the conversation shifted away from helping those in need, according to the Post.

Meanwhile, the American Red Cross said the resort has become a source of controversy.

The high-profile cancellations come after Trump ignited criticism for his remarks in response to the rally last weekend. Trump said that “both sides” bore some responsibility for violence at the rally.

The rally featured white supremacist, nationalist, and neo-Nazi groups protesting the removal of a statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee. There was also a large group protesting the hate groups.

A man with Nazi sympathies was charged by police with driving his car into a throng of counter-protesters Saturday, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring 19 people.
