Hunter Biden’s ex-wife writes memoir and opens up about ‘lost’ identity after divorce

Hunter Bidens ex-wife is speaking out about their divorce, saying she “lost” herself after the split nearly five years ago.

Kathleen Buhle, a 53-year-old nonprofit development executive, talked to People about how addiction can ruin relationships as she gears up for the release of her memoir If We Break: A Memoir of Marriage, Addiction, which is due out June 14.

“When my marriage ended, I felt like I’d lost my sense of who I was,” Buhle said. “Anyone who has seen addiction ruin a relationship, or been through infidelity and divorce, can tell you how devastating it feels. But what I also realize through those crushing experiences is that I needed to find a way to stand on my own.”

Buhle talks about her marriage to Biden, which started in 1993 and ended in 2017, and the aftermath. They have three daughters together: Naomi, Finnegan, and Maisy.

“Writing this book has been incredibly healing for me,” Buhle said. “My hope is it will be meaningful to those who have been through addiction or divorce and especially to women who have felt like their entire identity was tied to their spouse. In the end, divorce allowed me to find my strength.”

Buhle alleged in legal documents filed in a Washington, D.C., Superior Court on Feb. 23, 2017, that Biden had spent money on things ranging from prostitutes to drugs and alcohol, according to Page Six. The couple finalized their divorce in April 2017, but before that, Biden revealed that he was romantically involved with his late brother Beau’s widow, Hallie.

Buhle’s publisher, Penguin Random House, said the book speaks about how Hunter’s ex-wife has gone from “working-class roots,” to “losing her maiden name and a part of herself in becoming Kathleen Biden,” including to how she found a “sense of identity, purpose, and joy” in the ending of her marriage.

Biden has also opened up about his past with drug addiction, his divorce, and dealing with his brother Beau’s death in his memoir Beautiful Things. The memoir was published April 6 and went on to sell 10,638 copies in the first week, making its way to No. 12 on the list of top U.S. hardcover nonfiction sales.

Biden, now 51, remarried to South African divorced filmmaker Melissa Cohen in a secret wedding May 19, 2019. The couple welcomed a baby son March 28, 2020. Biden has five children, including one born in 2018 with a woman from Arkansas. Amid a legal battle, Biden agreed in 2020 to pay the former adult club dancer child support.
