Veterans and children (did someone forget to invite puppies?)

Kids of Washington: Make room in your backpacks and poke a couple airholes in them while you’re at it, for Wednesday is the fifth annual Take a Veteran to School Day.

Luckily, you don’t have to find your own. The Department of Veteran Affairs, in conjunction with the History Channel and Cox Communications, is bringing our nation’s soldiers into over 5,000 schools in all 50 states for classroom visits.

At Mt. Vernon Wood Elementary in Alexandria — one of more than 100 participating schools in Virginia — veterans will be greeted by about 100 students waving home-made flags, and they’ll get to chat later at a special reception.

With Veterans Day on Friday, there’s been no shortage of events connecting soldiers with kids. Montgomery County Public Schools hosted an event honoring military families, and inviting them to ask questions about the school system, at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville on Nov. 3.
