Making a brand out of ?The Pratt?

In case you haven?t heard, the Enoch Pratt Free Library is ? well ? free.

Last week, Enoch Pratt Free Library officially launched “The Year of the Pratt,” a yearlong campaign aiming to enhance public knowledge of the services the 136-year-old library provides.

“A number of forces are combining to make this unprecedented year come together,” Enoch Pratt Free Library Executive Director Carla Hayden said. “We have something new happening every month.”

The Pratt chose this year to update because they wanted to help people realize that the library is a free resource for everyone, Hayden said.

The library will open two new branches in 2007, one on the corner of Eastern Avenue and Conkling Street, the other at Central Avenue and Orleans Street. These branches are the first new library constructions in over 30 years. A renovation and expansion of the Roland Park Branch will be unveiled in the fall and a new mobile unit will debut, which allows customers to use the library?s services on the road. The library will launch an updated Web address and site this winter.

The Pratt hired Hampden-based Shanosky and Associates to develop a public awareness campaign, as well as a new logo and tagline. The firm surveyed residents, employees and management to get a better feel of the Pratt?s brand.

“What we learned is that the library is a much more vibrant, diverse and capable library [now] than it has been in the past,” said Adam Shanosky, director of the firm. “The Pratt offers a wide breadth of resources, but many people in the community are unaware of that.”

Shanosky considered it more important to modify the existing logo rather than create a new one.

“The new logo remains a stylized rendering of the E and P. The old logo depicts a book ? a thing, but the new logo instead describes a process ? the act of discovery,” he said. “And the new tagline, ?Your journey starts here,? emphasizes that the library is about much more than books ? it?s about the process of enrichment.”
