China’s ambassador to Israel was found dead in his home in a Tel Aviv suburb.
The 57-year-old ambassador, Du Wei, was found dead in his bed by an embassy worker on Sunday, according to reports.
The death is not being treated as suspicious, but the cause was not immediately clear. Israeli news organizations reported that there were no signs of violence.
Du’s wife and son were not in the country at the time, according to Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Chinese Embassy has not commented on the death.
Du assumed his position in February. His death comes a week after Secretary of State Mike Pompeo condemned China’s actions during the coronavirus pandemic during his visit to Jerusalem. He called on Israeli leaders to stop working with China on infrastructure and communications-related matters.
