White House deputy press secretary Raj Shah said Monday that Hamas is responsible for the death of dozens of Palestinians who were shot by Israeli troops during violent protests in Gaza.

“The responsibility for these tragic deaths rests squarely with Hamas,” Shah said at the White House. “Hamas is intentionally and cynically providing this response, and as the secretary of state said, Israel has the right to defend itself.”
