Tour bus crash involving tractor trailer closes New York highway

Multiple people were killed in a Niagara Falls tour bus crash in Genesee County, New York, that closed down a highway on Friday.

New York State Police confirmed the incident in a post on X, warning that all lanes on I-90 in Pembroke were closed and that drivers should seek alternative routes. Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) said she had been briefed on the “tragic” matter in a statement on the same platform.

“For unknown reasons, the vehicle lost control, went into the median, overcorrected, and ended up in the ditch,” New York State Trooper James O’Callaghan said on Friday.

“And at this time, we have multiple fatalities, multiple entrapments, and multiple injuries,” he said.

All four available mercy flights were requested, with multiple victims stuck in or under the crashed tour bus, according to the Genesee County Fire Wire. The tour bus rolled over, ejecting or trapping multiple passengers. Up to 52 victims were reported, but not yet confirmed, with medical units from surrounding counties responding to the crisis.

At least two children were among those airlifted to the hospital.
