Hillary Clinton on Monday announced her decision to spend the next few years at the helm of Onward Together, a new progressive organization working to build a major national coalition of liberal voters.
“The last few months, I’ve been reflecting, spending time with family—and, yes, taking walks in the woods,” Clinton tweeted Monday afternoon. “This year hasn’t been what I envisioned, but I know what I’m still fighting for: a kinder, big-hearted, inclusive America. Onward!”

Onward Together seeks to unite and empower Democratic voters to win back the House in 2018 and cultivate their farm team for future local, state and national elections.
Former Democratic National Committee Chair Howard Dean will be a primary leader of the organization, which will work with like-minded Democratic groups like Color of Change, Emerge America, Run for Something, Indivisible Team and Swing Left. Clinton did not specify her specific role in the group.
“People across America have made their voices heard thanks to @IndivisibleTeam, and supported @swingleft’s efforts to take back the House … @ColorOfChange is organizing for criminal justice reform, voter freedom, fairness and accuracy in media, and other racial justice issues … @EmergeAmerica is training diverse Democratic women candidates, and thousands of young people have signed up to @runforsomething,” Clinton wrote.
“By encouraging people to organize, get involved, and run for office, Onward Together will advance progressive values and work to build a brighter future for generations to come,” Onward Together’s mission statement says.
The group’s name is a subtle play on Clinton’s campaign motto in the 2016 presidential campaign “Stronger Together.” Onward Together’s motto is “resist, insist, persist, enlist.”
The Republican National Committee responded to the announcement by quipping that it’s time for Democrats to “move onward from Hillary Clinton.”
“The American people rejected Hillary Clinton six months ago because she’s completely out-of-touch, untrustworthy, and embraced the failed policies of the past. If Democrats were smart, they’d realize it’s time to move onward from Hillary Clinton altogether,” RNC spokesman Michael Ahrens said.
