Man sues after fire kills fiancée, son

A Baltimore man who lost his pregnant fiancée and his 9-year-old son in a fatal fire in July plans to file a $52.3 million lawsuit against his apartment company, accusing them of failing to install working smoke detectors.

“City firefighters have described this horrific tragedy as preventable, if only there had been working smoke detectors in the apartment where these individuals lived,” attorney David Ellin wrote in a statement.

The lawsuit names Saloman Rosskamn and Blue Fountain Apartments LLC as the management company.

On July 14, a fire broke out at 1903 North Forest Park Ave., killing Roy Riley Jr.’s fiancée, Raheem Muhammed, 28; his son, Royelle Riley, 9; and Muhammed’s niece Markia Summerfield, 7. Royelle’s birthday was the next day, according to Ellin.

Ellin is expected to hold a news conference at 10 a.m. today at his downtown office.
