TIVERTON, R.I. (AP) — The Tiverton School Committee has approved a new policy under which high school students who show signs of alcohol consumption at school events would be given Breathalyzer tests.
The superintendent’s office tells The Associated Press the policy passed unanimously at Tuesday’s committee meeting.
Under the policy, only students suspected of having consumed alcohol would be given the test, and it would be given in private. Results would become part of a student’s educational record, and not released to police without parental consent.
If a student tests positive, a parent will have to take the student home. If a parent isn’t available, police will be called to do the same.
The policy allows students to refuse the test.
