President Donald Trump has grown weary of Democrats’ efforts to prolong the government shutdown. He has called on Republican senators to use the “nuclear option,” which would eliminate the filibuster, to end it.
In two posts to his Truth Social account late Thursday night, the president urged Republicans to end the filibuster in order to end the shutdown. In his message, Trump scolded the Democrats, labeling them “crazy,” insinuating that this is why drastic legislative measures must be taken, citing previous efforts by Democrats to try to implement the procedure.
“….BECAUSE OF THE FACT THAT THE DEMOCRATS HAVE GONE STONE COLD “CRAZY,” THE CHOICE IS CLEAR — INITIATE THE “NUCLEAR OPTION,” GET RID OF THE FILIBUSTER AND, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump said in his first post.
In his second post, Trump touted his successful Asia visit in which he “met the leaders of many countries” and agreed to “great trade deals.” He mentioned that during his diplomatic trip, he was allegedly frequently asked about the political stalemate and how “the Democrats shut down the United States of America.”
“Great Trade Deals were made, Long Term relationships now exist, and money is pouring into our Country because of Tariffs and, frankly, the Landslide Results of the 2024 Presidential Election,” Trump said. “The one question that kept coming up, however, was how did the Democrats SHUT DOWN the United States of America, and why did the powerful Republicans allow them to do it? The fact is, in flying back, I thought a great deal about that question, WHY?”
Trump praised House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) for their efforts to end the shutdown, then shifted the blame back to the Democrats, saying their desire to keep the government closed was a form of “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
“…the Democrats are Crazed Lunatics that have lost all sense of WISDOM and REALITY. It is a sick form of the now “legendary” Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) that only comes from losing too much,” the president posted. “They want Trillions of Dollars to be taken from our Healthcare System and given to others, who are not deserving — People who have come into our Country illegally, many from prisons and mental institutions.”
“This will hurt American citizens, and Republicans will not let it happen,” he added. “It is now time for the Republicans to play their “TRUMP CARD,” and go for what is called the Nuclear Option — Get rid of the Filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW!”
A key point Trump made was referencing previous attempts by Democrats to end the filibuster to pass their legislation. It would have succeeded if not for the efforts of former Sens. Joe Manchin (I-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ). Trump highlighted this fact, urging Republicans to do it themselves. He warned that Democrats would have no reservations in doing so the next time they hold power.

“Never have the Democrats fought so hard to do something because they knew the tremendous strength that terminating the Filibuster would give them,” Trump said. “Well, now WE are in power, and if we did what we should be doing, it would IMMEDIATELY end this ridiculous, Country destroying “’SHUT DOWN.’”
“If the Democrats ever came back into power, which would be made easier for them if the Republicans are not using the Great Strength and Policies made available to us by ending the Filibuster, the Democrats will exercise their rights, and it will be done in the first day they take office, regardless of whether or not we do it,” Trump said in his post.
The government shutdown enters its 31st day on Friday. It began at 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 1.
