US identifies three Special Forces soldiers killed in Jordan

The Defense Department announced that three Special Forces soldiers died Friday as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the effort the against the Islamic State. The three were killed as their convoy came under heavy fire while entering a military base in Jordan.

The soldiers were identified as Staff Sgt. Matthew Lewellen, 27, of Lawrence, Kan., Staff Sgt. Kevin McEnroe, 30, of Tucson, Ariz., and Staff Sgt. James Moriarty, 27, of Kerrville, Texas. All were assigned to the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) operating out of Fort Campbell, Ky.

The military did not release any further details of the incident, which it said it was still investigating.

Operation Inherent Resolve is an effort “to degrade and defeat the Islamic State of Iraq” in that country and neighboring Syria. Jordan, a U.S. ally, also neighbors Iraq.
