Washington Examiner Senior Writer Joe Concha dismissed the notion that the Trump Department of Justice is pursuing “retribution” cases against New York Attorney General Letitia James, former FBI Director James Comey, and former national security adviser John Bolton.
President Donald Trump appeared on CBS News’s 60 Minutes on Sunday to respond to suspicions surrounding a number of indictments against public figures. CBS Anchor Norah O’Donnell suggested that “there is a pattern” among James, Comey, and Bolton because “they are all public figures who have publicly denounced” the president.
“Is it political retribution?” O’Donnell asked Trump. “Did you instruct the Department of Justice to go after–”
“Not in any way, shape, or form, no. You don’t have to instruct them, because they were so dirty, they were so crooked, they were so corrupt,” Trump said.
“I think the president is correct here,” Concha reacted to the clip on Fox News’s Fox and Friends First Monday. “It’s not about retribution, it’s about those six words we heard over and over again when it came to President Trump: No one is above the law.”
“So, whether we are talking about James Comey or John Bolton or Letitia James, the question is: Did they break the law and be held accountable?” Concha added.
Trump took to Truth Social in September to demand “JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED” regarding Comey, but also James and Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA).

Comey’s charges have to do with a September 2020 hearing during which he denied authorizing anonymous media disclosures related to the Trump-Russia investigation. Bolton is facing 18 charges related to his alleged improper handling of classified documents. Meanwhile, James has federal charges against her of bank fraud and making false statements to a financial institution. James is alleged to have falsely claimed a Norfolk, Virginia, home as her personal second residence when it was instead rented to a family of three.
Comey, Bolton, and James have all pleaded not guilty. Comey is trying to dismiss his case entirely. James has signaled that she will challenge the legality of U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan’s appointment.
