Rep. Will Hurd said it was a “good decision” to kill top Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani ahead of remarks from President Trump a day after ballistic missiles launched by Iran struck an Iraqi-U.S. coalition military base in western Iraq.
Speaking with Fox News host Bill Hemmer, Hurd, a former CIA officer, was asked why the administration hadn’t acted sooner to eliminate the Iranian general.
“Why not take Soleimani out earlier?” asked Hemmer.
“It’s a good question, and I don’t know the answer to that,” responded the Texas Republican. “I think if we had the opportunity to get him, we should have.”
Hurd pointed to an Army War College report that found the Iranian government changes its behavior when faced with destructive consequences.
“All those that were doubting whether or not this was a good decision, I think time is telling us that it was a good decision,” he added.
Hurd, 42, has been critical of Trump in the past, calling his July 25 call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky “misguided” and chiding the president for suggesting the Chinese investigate political rival Joe Biden.
