Five arrested related to Halloween shooting in California

Five men were arrested in the San Francisco Bay area two weeks after a shooting at a massive Halloween house party left five dead.

The Contra Costa Sheriff’s office arrested the five men in four separate raids due to their roles in a shooting that killed five and injured three in an Airbnb in Orinda, California. Lebraun Wallace, 28, Jaquez Sweeney, 20, Jason Iles, 20, and Shamron Mitchell, 30, were arrested on suspicion of murder and conspiracy. Devin Isiah Williamson, 21, was arrested on accessory charges.

The Sheriff’s department said the shooting could have been between rival gangs. Sheriff David Livingston noted that two of the victims of the shooting were also armed. He explained that the exchanging gunfire likely “played a role in the tragedy.”

At the time of the shooting, first responders claimed they were “being overwhelmed” when the shooting took place. Following criticism for the department’s slow response to the shooting, Orinda Police Chief David Cook requested funding for more officers, as the city only had two on duty that evening.

It is unclear if the city will approve the funding requests. The Orinda City Council put a temporary ban on “no-host short term” rentals because the shooting took place at an Airbnb.
