Sour note: Grammys ratings hang at record low, while other ceremonies rebound

Music’s biggest night” wasn’t so big.

The 2022 Grammy Awards Sunday night did not see the partial rebound in ratings that last week’s Oscars did, only clocking in at 8.93 million viewers across CBS and Paramount+.

This makes them the second-least-watched Grammys ever. The least-watched show was in 2021, in the midst of the pandemic, when only 8.8 million viewers tuned in.

Prior to the pandemic, in 2019, 19.9 million people watched the prestigious music awards ceremony.

Performances by Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Jon Batiste, BTS, Billie Eilish, Carrie Underwood, and others were not enough to rake in viewers.

While the 2022 Oscars, Critics Choice Awards, and SAG Awards did not live up to their former glory, they all significantly rebounded after dismal 2021 viewership. The Grammys, however, barely surpassed their 2021 viewers.

R&B singer Jon Batiste took home five Grammy awards, one of them for album of the year, while duo Silk Sonic snagged both record and song of the year. Olivia Rodrigo won big, with three awards at her first Grammys, including best new artist.

In the wake of drummer Taylor Hawkins’s tragic death at just 50 years old, The Foo Fighters won best rock album, best rock performance, and best rock song. They were scheduled to perform. However, a moment of silence and brief video tribute for Hawkins took place instead.

Despite its low ratings, the awards show avoided any onstage violence after last week’s tumultuous Oscars, featuring a high-profile slap by Will Smith of comedian Chris Rock.
