A new poll shows President Trump’s support consistent, despite 8 in 10 voters saying the country is “out of control.”
Voters were surveyed ahead of Friday’s surprise jobs report, which showed a declining unemployment rate and the addition of 2.5 million jobs in May, numbers that surprised many and could benefit Trump.
In an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday, Trump’s job approval among registered voters stands at 45%, just a 1-point drop from April’s survey. While 53% disapproved of the work the president is doing, 31% said they strongly approved.
Protests have occurred nationwide following the death of George Floyd while in the custody of Minneapolis police, with demonstrators calling for police reforms.
The poll found 59% of voters more concerned about police actions toward the protesters compared to 27% who said they were more concerned about the violent protests.
Amid this, Trump has echoed predecessors, Presidents Ronald Reagan and Richard Nixon, in calling for military force to suppress dissent, a message that some former military leaders who served in Trump’s Cabinet have rebuked.
The poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters between May 28 to June 2, with the results holding an overall margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
