A historian speculated that President Trump originally picked one of his own properties to host next year’s G-7 summit because he is in debt.
Yale professor Timothy Snyder argued that Trump may have chosen to host the summit at Trump National Doral Miami because he “need[s] money” during a Saturday appearance on CNN.
“One thing it has me thinking about is just how much this man must actually need money,” Snyder said. “Why else would he be doing this? We still don’t know whether Mr. Trump has money. We know that he has lots of debts, and that he is going for a million here and a million there with these sorts of things, it suggests he might really need money.”
“It is odd to me he would want to draw attention to this particular property at this particular time,” he went on, questioning how Trump was able to pay for the property at the time he purchased it.
Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney announced the selection Thursday. He defended the choice by arguing the president will be “doing this at a cost” and claimed that “it will be dramatically cheaper for us.”
Trump announced that the G-7 summit will no longer be held at Doral late Saturday night. It remains unclear where they will host the event.
