Camp Pendleton closed main gate temporarily after driver attempted to breach base

The main gate of the U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton was closed for more than two hours Friday night after the driver of a vehicle attempted to gain access to the camp by ramming into the security barriers.

“We can confirm at approximately 6:30 p.m. there was an attempt to gain unauthorized access to the installation,” Camp Pendleton wrote in a tweet.

The MCB Camp Pendleton Provost Marshall Office reportedly erected physical barriers known as “final denial barriers,” which are physical barriers that deny unauthorized access.

The military base, located in Oceanside, California, issued an alert of the temporary closure of the gate after the incident. Camp visitors were advised to access the Del Mar Gate as an alternative.

A social media video of the vehicle that crashed into the camp’s barriers shows the car on fire and with significant damage to the front where it was “disabled” by the camp’s barriers.

The gate reopened to traffic around 9 p.m. Friday.
