The 100th House Democrat announced support for impeaching President Trump, a milestone that will make it increasingly difficult for Speaker Nancy Pelosi to stave off an inquiry.
Democratic Rep. Annie Kuster of New Hampshire announced Friday she is in favor of an impeachment inquiry following former special counsel Robert Mueller’s testimony Wednesday about his investigation into alleged collusion between the Trump 2016 campaign and the Russians.
“Given the special counsel’s testimony, and the evidence outlined in his report, I support the House of Representatives opening a formal inquiry,” Kuster said in a statement. “Under Article 1 of the Constitution, the House of Representatives has the sole power to evaluate whether or not the President’s conduct warrants bringing articles of impeachment. I have not prejudged the outcome. I believe in the integrity of the process, and I believe it is my duty under my oath to the Constitution to ensure nobody is above the law.”
While Mueller’s testimony was largely judged as flat and ineffective, six more Democrats have added their names to the list of those seeking impeachment, including the Deputy Caucus Chairwoman Katherine Clark of Massachusetts.
Democrats say Mueller confirmed that Trump broke the law by obstructing the probe.
The number of pro-impeachment Democrats still falls far short of a majority of the 235-member caucus.
Pelosi said Thursday the House does not have the evidence needed to pursue impeachment and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler of New York, who is pursuing an investigation of Trump’s finances and his administration, said there are “no real divisions with the speaker” on the matter.
