A$AP Rocky: Trump ‘didn’t free me’ and ‘made it a little worse’ in Swedish prison

A$AP Rocky said former President Donald Trump‘s involvement in the 2019 Swedish assault case that landed him in prison “didn’t free me,” adding that Trump’s public comments on the rapper’s arrest “made it a little worse.”

Rocky’s comments about the former president were featured in the documentary Stockholm Syndrome, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on Sunday, June 13. The documentary recounts when the rapper was arrested along with two members of his entourage in July 2019 on charges of aggravated assault following an altercation in Stockholm.

“In reality, I had no problem saying thank you to the man, especially if he helped me,” Rocky said of Trump. “That’s the narrative they pushin’ — that he got me out. And he didn’t free me. If anything, he made it a little worse.”

After Rocky’s arrest on July 3, 2019, while traveling abroad, rapper and then-prominent Trump supporter Kanye West tapped the president to aid Rocky on July 19. Trump then vowed to call the prime minister of Sweden “to see what we can do about helping A$AP Rocky.”

Rocky, whose birth name is Rakim Mayers, recounted his time in Swedish prison when he discovered Trump was vouching for his freedom.

“I’m sleeping in my halfway dream,” Rocky says in the documentary. “I heard my name. I kind of opened my eyes and closed my eyes again, and then [Trump] said my name again. And I opened my eyes, and I’m like, ‘Yo, what the f***?’”

The “Praise the Lord” star added that he was “scared” Trump was going to “f*** it up,” referring to his chances of a prison release.

“But then, on the other hand, I’m just like, ‘That’s what’s up, man.’ You want the most support you could, and it’s like, ‘Oh, the president supports you.’ That felt good,” Rocky said. “Cause for the most part, I don’t think he ever knows what’s going on in the urban communities. … I was thankful for that, I can’t lie. I was also scared that it would jeopardize me being in [jail] longer.”

Rocky was eventually found guilty of assault in Swedish court but was granted the equivalent of a suspended sentence that allowed him to return to the United States in early August that year.

“It was a Rocky Week, get home ASAP, A$AP,” Trump tweeted on Aug. 2, 2019.

Prior to the documentary release, Rocky said in a GQ interview that the role of the former president in his freedom was a “misperception” of the events, adding, “He rooted for me to come home, but he didn’t free me.”
