President Trump on Tuesday said he wants people to see special counsel Robert Mueller’s final report on his investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
“Let it come out. Let the people see it,” the president told reporters before leaving the White House for Ohio. “That’s up to the attorney general. We have a very good attorney general. He’s a very highly respected man, and we’ll see what happens.”
Trump added that he doesn’t mind if the American public sees the report.
“Frankly, I told the House if you want, let them see it,” he said.
Mueller has been leading the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and whether members of the Trump campaign colluded with Russia since May 2017.
Some speculate that Mueller and his team are nearing the end of their investigation, which has resulted in indictments of 34 people and three Russian companies. Among those indicted are Michael Flynn, Trump’s former national security adviser, Paul Manafort, his former campaign chairman, and Roger Stone, the president’s longtime informal political adviser.
In recent weeks, numerous prosecutors who joined Mueller’s investigation have left or will soon leave their posts with the special counsel’s office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Zainab Ahmad exited the special counsel’s office this week and deputy special counsel Andrew Weissmann intends to depart the Mueller’s office “in the near future.”
Many see the departures as a sign Mueller’s probe may be nearing its end and his report will be soon sent to Attorney General William Barr.
Trump said that he and millions of other Americans want to see the report.
“You know who wants to see it?” the president said. “The tens of millions of people that love the fact that we have the greatest economy we’ve ever had.”
