Given the opportunity to attend Oxford Law School or head to NFL training camp this summer for a tryout with the Miami Dolphins, British Olympian Lawrence Okoye chose football.
“At this point in my life, you kind of discover yourself, kind of discover who you are as a person, in your 20s,” Okoye told ESPN. “I’m still in that discovery process, still learning what I’m about as a person. I can’t give a definitive answer (about) what I’d like to do at some point in the future, because it’s so day-to-day right now.”
Okoye has no guarantee of making the Dolphins, his sixth stop in the NFL without appearing in a single game. Okoye has never played in an actual football game at any level — professional, collegiate, high school or otherwise — according to NBC. Okoye represented the United Kingdom in the 2012 Olympics, placing 12th in the discus, and played some rugby before falling in love with American football.
Oxford’s law school is ranked among the best in the world, but the 6-foot-6 304-pounder has decided to take his talents to South Beach instead. He reportedly deferred his acceptance to next month and plans to let the deadline pass without accepting it.
