Man arrested after hitting police officer with car

A Crofton man was charged with drunken driving after his vehicle hit an Anne Arundel County police officer conducting a traffic stop for another suspected drunken driver, police said Monday.

Officer Alex Swartz, 36, a three-year veteran, was treated for minor lower-body and leg injuries, police spokesman Cpl. Mark Shawkey said.

David Gregory, 21, struck Swartz with his 2004 Saturn Ion at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday as Swartz was trying to get in his patrol car.

The Saturn caused the patrol car?s door to rotate 180 degrees toward the front of the car, crushing it against the front fender, police said.

Swartz had stopped another Crofton man, whose name has not been released, at the intersection of Riedel Road and Notely Lane on suspicion of drunken driving just before the accident, police said.

That man?s passenger, Rebecca Burke, was standing next to the patrol car at the time of the crash but was not injured.

Neither Gregory nor his passenger, Shelby Ann Estep, of Gambrills, who owns the Saturn, was hurt, police said.

A Crofton police officer and an Anne Arundel police officer, who were helping Swartz with the traffic stop, arrested Gregory immediately.
