WHO: Department of Transportation
WHAT: The DOT is spending $7 million in federal stimulus funding to build a wharf in Motor City along the Detroit River. The project’s supporters, including Sen. Carl Levin, D-MI, say the wharf might attract passenger ferry service and cruise ships.
WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE: Spending money to attract tourists doesn’t make much sense, especially when Detroit’s own residents are leaving town. Nearly 50,000 homes in Detroit are vacant, and the city’s homicide and unemployment rates lead the nation.
