New Hampshire Republican Kelly Ayotte shot back at Massachusetts Democrat Elizabeth Warren Wednesday, after Warren reiterated Donald Trump’s charge that Ayotte was “weak” during a rally in New Hampshire Monday.
“Maybe she should ask the police and the law enforcement of our state whether they think I’m weak, having been attorney general of our state, having been a murder prosecutor, having had the endorsement of the Troopers Association,” Ayotte said during an interview with Boston Herald Radio.
Ayotte is in a tight reelection bid against Democratic governor Maggie Hassan and found herself in trouble after saying earlier this month that Trump would “absolutely” serve as a role model for her children. Ayotte has since walked back that remark and unendorsed Trump.
Warren went after Ayotte for her teetering Trump support at a campaign rally with Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire Monday, where Hassan also took the stage.
“Day one, she loves him. Day two, she hates him. Day three, she’s back with him. Boy she spins round and round,” she said. “Donald Trump is right. Kelly is weak.”
Ayotte said Wednesday that New Hampshire voters would “see right through” Warren’s words.
“The thing about her coming to New Hampshire, a Massachusetts senator, and telling the voters what New Hampshire … should do—I think we see right through that,” Ayotte said. “I don’t think Senator Warren speaks for New Hampshire.”
The Republican senator added that Warren is “just like Governor Hassan.”
“She has never met a tax increase she doesn’t like, and that’s not the way of New Hampshire. That’s not what I stand for.”
In the interview, Ayotte also distanced herself from Trump’s controversial claim that the election is “rigged.”
“I believe in the outcome and certainly in my race, I will accept the outcome,” she said.
A recent WBZ-University of Massachusetts poll found Ayotte leading Hassan by 3 points, at 46 and 43 percent support respectively. According to the Real Clear Politics polling average, Hassan has a .8-point lead over Ayotte.
