The U.S. attorney responsible for opening an investigation into discarded military ballots before the 2020 election has resigned from his position.
“I am grateful to President Trump and Senators Toomey and Casey for the opportunity to serve; and to former Attorneys General Sessions and Barr for their leadership of the Department,” Attorney David J. Freed said in his resignation announcement.
As the U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Freed announced in September that he was opening an investigation into mail-in military ballots that were discovered discarded in a Pennsylvania dumpster. Investigators found that of the nine ballots that were found, seven of them had cast votes from President Trump.
The worker found responsible for the ballots was an independent contractor and was removed from his position, only having been employed for a three day period.
Freed, who served as Cumberland County district attorney for 12 years before becoming U.S. attorney, thanked colleagues and touted the accomplishments of his office.
“For the past three years, I have had the great fortune to work with the highly skilled attorneys and staff in the Middle District of Pennsylvania. It is an office blessed with experienced and dedicated leaders, and colleagues who truly understand the importance of working together for the benefit of their fellow citizens,” Freed said.
Freed continued: “More than anything over the past three years, I have endeavored above all to tell the story of the great accomplishments of the office. While the public words are mine, the accomplishments belong to them.”
