UPDATE: Capt. Paul Starks, a Montgomery County police spokesman, said Friday afternoon that the 36-year-old woman was not hit, and her 16-month-old child’s injuries are considered serious but not life-threatening.
Starks said witnesses told police that the woman and child were in the crosswalk when the child’s stroller was hit by a 1998 green Ford Explorer, driven by a 53-year-old Silver Spring woman. The driver appeared to have a green light, witnesses told police.
Starks said it’s possible other vehicles blocked the pedestrian and driver from seeing each other.
A mother and her child were reportedly hit by a car Friday morning on Georgia Avenue near Aspen Hill Road.
Initial reports indicated that the woman was pushing her child in a stroller, Montgomery County police spokeswoman Angela Cruz said.
She said the accident occurred shortly before 10:30 a.m. The extent of their injuries isn’t known, but she said the department’s collision reconstruction unit has been dispatched to the scene, which only happens in severe crashes.
No lookout has been issued for the vehicle, so the driver likely remained at the scene, Cruz said.
The northbound lanes of Georgia Avenue are closed from Hewitt Avenue past Aspen Hill Road. Southbound lanes are open.
