People are witnessing a massive crime wave unfold across the country, and it will have consequences at the ballot box, Washington Examiner Editor-in-Chief Hugo Gurdon said Wednesday.
During an interview with Fox News, Gurdon argued that anti-police rhetoric from prominent Democrats following the killing of George Floyd in May 2020 has put the party in a difficult position for the midterm election cycle as people cope with increased safety concerns.
AMERICA IS VIDEOTAPING ITS DECLINE
“What’s happening now is that there’s a huge crime wave, and Democrats are really suffering from it,” Gurdon said in the interview. “Everyone carries a camera, we’re seeing crimes being committed not in real-time, but we’re going back and looking at them. Americans are actually able to watch and see a huge crime wave taking place.”
Gurdon said that since Floyd died, the Democrats have been “basically siding with criminals” by failing to support the police and promoting prosecutors who have declined to prosecute certain types of crimes.
A recent study conducted by the Council on Criminal Justice evaluated data from 22 cities and found that murders increased by about 5% in 2021 from the previous year.
Maria Bartiromo, a host on Fox Business and Fox News, showed video of crime in major U.S. cities. She also displayed statistics showing increased robberies in Los Angeles and New York City. Gurdon said he believes voters will not react well to the increased crime and suggested that some Democrats have realized this and begun to back away from some of their previous rhetoric.
He noted that much of the increase in crime across the United States has disproportionately affected minorities, who have drifted away from Democrats during recent election cycles. Gurdon said he believes Democrats will likely “be held accountable in general” but noted that some of the worst offenders are in safe districts and will likely be reelected.

When asked about House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to run for reelection, Gurdon said he was not surprised but is interested in whether she will try to remain the leader of the House Democrats. In her announcement, Pelosi argued that democracy was at stake in the midterm elections. Gurdon said Democrats know they are likely in for a “walloping” in 2022 and are casting doubt on the legitimacy of the election as part of a “preemptive spin.”
“Even though Donald Trump’s questioning of the legitimacy of the election after 2020 was the worst example by a considerable margin, the Democrats have been doing it themselves,” he said. “Al Gore did it, John Edwards did it. Joe Biden did it just the other day, and now House Democrats are doing it. So this is a tradition for Democrats.”
