Ilhan Omar at Daunte Wright funeral: It’s a ‘tragedy’ that Ma’Khia Bryant’s life was ‘taken by Columbus police’

Rep. Ilhan Omar, while speaking at the funeral of Daunte Wright, referred to the shooting death of Ma’Khia Bryant as a “tragedy” in which her life was “taken” by police.

“Just like we’ve been visited by tragedy here in Minnesota often, she in Columbus, Ohio, was visited by a tragedy of a young woman whose life was taken by Columbus police,” the Minnesota Democrat said during the funeral Thursday.

Bryant, 16, was shot and killed by police Tuesday afternoon while holding a knife and attempting to stab another person. Multiple videos of the incident have surfaced, and in one of the videos released Thursday, someone, presumably Bryant, can be heard yelling, “I’ma stab the f— out you, b—-.”

“We know, based on this footage, the officer took action to protect another young girl in our community,” interim Columbus Police Chief Michael Woods said about the officer’s decision to use deadly force.

Omar was joined at Wright’s funeral by Rev. Al Sharpton, whom Omar referred to as a “guardian” and said she was “blessed” to be in his presence.

At one point, Sharpton said someone told him that he hadn’t seen such a large funeral since music legend Prince died, to which Sharpton responded by labeling Wright as the “prince of Brooklyn Center.”

“Well, we came to bury the prince of Brooklyn Center,” Sharpton said. “We come from all over the country because you hurt one of our princes. That’s why we’re in this temple with purple all over because it represents royalty. You thought he was just some kid with an air freshener. He was a prince. And all of Minneapolis is stopped today to honor the prince of Brooklyn Center.”

Wright, who was 20, was shot and killed earlier this month by a 26-year veteran of the Brooklyn Center Police Department, who police say accidentally shot him with her firearm when she meant to use her Taser. The officer, 48-year-old Kim Potter, shot Wright as he was attempting to escape from police while resisting arrest for a felony warrant.

Potter has resigned from the police force and has been charged with second-degree manslaughter.
