Never mind Newsom: Feinstein says she isn’t stepping down early

Sen. Dianne Feinstein says she isn’t planning to step down before her term is up.

The 87-year-old California Democrat told reporters on Tuesday that she has “not discussed” leaving office following comments from California Gov. Gavin Newsom about possible replacements for her should she resign before her term is up.

“I’ve not discussed that with anybody,” she said. “Nobody has asked me questions about it.”

The senator said that she felt reporters were taking the governor’s remarks too seriously.

“Please, we’re very good friends. I don’t think he meant that the way some people thought,” the senator added. “I don’t know about his plans, but his relationship with me, I think, is good and strong.”

Newsom told MSNBC in a Monday interview that he had “multiple names in mind” to replace Feinstein should she decide to step down early, promising that a black woman would be selected for the temporary post.

When asked whether she felt physically able to continue serving, Feinstein responded, “Absolutely. I think that’s pretty obvious.”

“I mean, you’re making a mountain out of a molehill,” she added.

Feinstein, who is in her sixth term, is the oldest U.S. senator. She is up for reelection in 2024, at which time she will be 91 years old.
