CNN’s Wolf Blitzer confronted Hillary Clinton’s press secretary Thursday with a series of questions about her email scandal, and repeatedly asked if she lied to the voters.
The anchor’s questions for Brian Fallon came shortly after a congressional hearing that saw FBI Director James Comey field questions from lawmakers regarding his agency’s investigation of Clinton’s use of an unauthorized private email server when she worked at the State Department.
“[Rep.] Jason Chaffetz asked the FBI director today if Secretary Clinton lied during her sworn testimony before the Benghazi Committee in Congress when she said, in her words, ‘there was nothing marked classified on my emails either sent or received,'” Blitzer asked. “Did she lie to Congress?”
Fallon maintained throughout the interview that the Democratic front-runner said nothing untruthful about her email server.
“Of course not,” Clinton’s press secretary said. “I’m not sure what the director meant there.”
Comey announced Monday he’d recommend no charges be brought against the Democratic presidential candidate. However, the FBI chief also revealed his agency found several disconcerting details regarding Clinton’s emails.
“From the group of 30,000 emails returned to the State Department, 110 emails in 52 email chains have been determined by the owning agency to contain classified information at the time they were sent or received,” he said, directly contradicting her earlier claim she never handled classified information over her private servers.
Fallon stuck to his guns, though, and insisted Thursday that what the FBI found doesn’t necessarily mean Clinton lied.
“The statements that she made to the FBI, you did hear the director characterize his view of her statements that she made in her interview that occurred last Saturday, and he said they had no basis to believe that she misled or lied to the FBI,” he said.
“The statements that she made to the FBI were perfectly consistent with what she said in public all along,” he added.
Comey said in Thursday’s congressional hearing that Clinton’s use of a private email server at the State Department was, “the definition of carelessness, of negligence.”
