We didn’t know how close we got it when we told you to make way “for a new D.C. events agency” earlier this week. On Wednesday the formerly cumbersome-to-say Washington Convention and Sports Authority unveiled its look as the sleek, new Events DC.
And if anyone’s counting the new moniker is about 30 characters shorter, or nearly one-quarter the length, than the old one. I think it’s safe for me to speak on behalf of reporters everywhere when I say — thank you.
Events DC, which owns and manages the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, RFK Stadium and Nationals Park, better reflects the agency’s broad mission, said President and CEO Greg O’Dell at Wednesday’s news conference. It also ties in with the branding of Destination DC, the city’s tourism bureau.
But one thing it hasn’t done yet is built up the Internet hits. A search for “Events DC” Wednesday afternoon on Google, which ranks results by relevance and popularity, results in lots of links to D.C. events calendars or other area social guides, but the new name for the old face doesn’t make the front page.
That’ll change as the new website gains steam but for now, that’s the price of a simpler name.
